Twitch’s rules
What Twitch checks
Static emotes are PNGs at 112, 56 and 28 px with a transparent background. Animated emotes are GIFs: one square file between 112 and 4096 px under 1 MB if you let Twitch resize, or three files at 112, 56 and 28 px under 512 KB each for manual upload. Up to 60 frames, and no more than three flashes in one second. Only Affiliates and Partners can upload animated emotes.
Downscaling is done in halves with high-quality smoothing, which keeps outlines from breaking up at 28 px. It can’t add detail that isn’t there: if your emote is busy, simplify it before shrinking.
Limits
What it doesn’t do
It doesn’t remove backgrounds, draw outlines or animate a still image. For that — or for a whole matching set from one picture — use the generator on the home page.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What sizes does this make?
For a GIF: animated 112, 56 and 28 px (each under 512 KB) and one 512 px GIF for Twitch’s auto-resize (under 1 MB), plus static PNGs at 112, 56 and 28 px. For a still image: the three PNG sizes.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The resizer runs entirely in your browser. Close the tab and nothing is left anywhere.
My GIF is over 512 KB at 112 px. What happens?
The encoder reduces the palette from 256 to 128 to 64 colors, then drops every other frame (doubling the delay so the speed stays the same). The result card shows which step it needed.
What does Fit vs Fill mean?
Fit pads a non-square image with transparency so nothing is cut off. Fill crops the center to a square. Twitch emotes must be square either way.
Can it fix a GIF with too many frames?
It warns you when a GIF has more than 60 frames, Twitch’s limit. Trim the frames in an editor first; dropping half of them here only happens to meet the file size.
Does it work for Kick or 7TV?
The 112 px files work for most chat platforms. For 7TV and Discord sizes use the emote checker to see what passes.
